This precision temperature compensated aneroid barometer and thermometer was manufactured by KILPATRICK & Co. MELBOURNE in the mid-late 19th Century. "ELLERY'S INDICATIONS." refers to the compensation method developed for the Southern Hemisphere by Robert Lewis John Ellery who, among other scientific roles he held with the Victorian Government from 1853 - 1890, was the Superintendent of the Astronomical Observatory at Gellibrand's Point. [1] The mercury filled thermometer is calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit. The enamelled face plate is in fair-good condition with only minor hair-line cracks visible on close inspection. The brass housing is in perfect condition and has developed a deep bronze patina over the 150+ years since it was made. The barometer is mounted on a beautifully polished or waxed Huon Pine circular mounting plate which has a classic 19th century contoured cross section. It has a few cracks consistent with age. Two holes are provided for screw flush-mounting to a vertical surface and a metal hanging plate for hanging by a single picture hook. The barometer case has a diameter of 13 cm and a depth of 3.6 cm. The round, Huon Pine, backing board has a diameter of 21 cm. Overall height is approximately 7 cm. Weight is 1.03 kg. [1] Ref. Wikipedia: Robert L. J. Ellery |
