This is a fine 19th Century 3-draw Day & Night Spyglass (telescope) by "Dolland" of London. The 3 main telescopic brass tubes are inside a wooden barrel bound in heavy duty stitched tan leather. The leather clad barrel has a diameter of approximately 6.3 cm (2.4") and it has a closed length of about 27 cm (10.6"). It extends to more than 79.5 cm (31.3").
The diameter of the ocular lens eyepiece is approximately 12 mm, and the objective lens diameter is 37.4 mm. The ocular lens' brass shutter is missing, as is the objective lens cap.
The engraving on the inner brass tube is "Dolland, London, Day & Night". Note that the only known 19th Century telescope maker based in London was Dollond & Co. (1872 - 1927). The optics are in working condition. |
