This is a rare, large, 19th-century lignum vitae deadeye with a diameter of 22.9cm (9"), thickness of 13.1cm (5.2"), and weight of 4kg. Deadeyes were essential components of the standing rigging on large 19th-century sailing ships (e.g., clippers, frigates, and ships of the line). They served as simple but robust blocks to tension and secure the shrouds and stays that supported the masts laterally and longitudinally. Rope is for display purposes only (NOT INCLUDED) |
