Description

This 12" bronze bell came from a cargo ship M.V. Manchester Vanguard (1), built in 1956. The ship was originally owned by Manchester Liners Ltd. (UK) and it sailed the Atlantic run from England to Canada and North America via the Saint Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes. In the winter months, when the Saint Lawrence Seaway was iced over, it just sailed to Lisbon and the Canary Islands.

The ship was sold to General Steam Navigation Co. in 1963, and it was renamed Sheldrake, so the bell must have left the ship at that time. How it found its way to Australia I can't say for sure, but whoever souvenired the bell in 1963 may have migrated here.

The bell is in very good condition for its age and has a really nice patina. The inscription reads "M.V. MANCHESTER VANGUARD". There is a slight bulge around the circumference (on left side in the image) maybe because it's been rung hundreds, if not thousands, of times. The current clapper is hanging a bit lower and isn't worn as much as you would expect, so it's probably not the original.

The bell weighs 8.8 kg (19.4 lb) including the clapper.

A braided cotton bell-pull rope and a brass mounting shackle are also available (POA).
